Media Party Africa has ended

Media Party Africa is hosted by the continent’s largest data journalism and civic technology federation, Code for Africa, in partnership with Hacks/Hackers Africa. Together, we’re gathering some of the world’s most exciting civic technologists, digital journalists and other social justice watchdogs from across the world for three days of workshops and talks.
We have speakers confirmed from Vox, ProPublica, ESPN, Buzzfeed Labs, Quartz, Huffington Post, Zeit Investigativ, Google, Jigsaw, First Draft News, the Gates Foundation, the Mozilla OpenNews Fellowships, and many more, talking everything from drone and sensor journalism, to how they’re pioneering 360˚and VR journalism, investigative technologies, geojournalism, verification, chat apps and the rise of the bots.

Omar is the 2014/2015 Hubert H. Humphrey Journalism Fellow at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, where he is focused on Business Journalism and how to practice the craft in a digital media landscape, especially on ways to leverage mobile technology to distribute content.

Back home in Tanzania, Omar is a Senior Consultant with africapractice, Omar advises both the private sector and non-profits on political risk and strategic communications.

Prior to joining Africa Practice, Omar worked as a Senior Producer for a BBC Swahili Service weekly news magazine show, 'Haba na Haba' which means 'Little by Little.'

Throughout his career, Omar has worked at the intersection of the emerging and increasingly influential point of technology, journalism and communications, providing him with an in-depth understanding of the ways in which today’s media shapes perceptions, and how organisations can engage this stakeholder group, as well as other stakeholders through the channel that the media offers.

Omar began his career as a media analyst, providing clients ranging from the private sector, development community and non-profits with advisory services on strategic thinking and influence.

Simultaneously, he contributed journalism to some of the premier media platforms in East Africa that include The East African, The (Ugandan) Independent, Global Voices and Vijana.FM, an influential blog in Tanzania.

He also created and hosted a weekly news review show, @Mgahawa, on the regional channel, East Africa Television.

Omar attended the University of St. Andrews in Scotland where he majored in English, with a minor in Philosophy.
